Subset's Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring has nearly sprung, and it's time to run those winter blues through the spin cycle. The season opening deep clean can be extremely therapeutic, as well as a bit overwhelming. Here is our must-clean checklist, with tips and tricks to get every part of your home feeling so fresh and so clean clean.

  • Declutter and Organize. Before you begin cleaning any area of your home, it is wise to clear out the clutter and organize. And what better time than spring cleaning! Bonus points if you donate any unwanted items to a local charity.
  • Baseboards – vacuum first, then clean. You don’t want to be wiping excess dirt around. Work smarter, not harder. Then, a bowl of hot water and a very small scoop of powdered Tide works great. Use an old rag or a scrub brush to clean the baseboards. *For added sparkle, go over the freshly cleaned baseboards with a Magic Eraser.
  • Washing machine filter – This is something that should technically be done monthly, but a lot of people forget about it. Follow the instructions on your specific model to ensure proper cleaning and reassembly of the filter
  • Tops of fridge and cabinets – These places tend to get overlooked, out of sight out of mind! But a good cleaning is necessary, even if you can’t see them. Start by dusting and/or vacuuming the tops, then proceed to clean with any multipurpose cleaner of your choice. *If you notice grease build up on top of your cabinets, Dawn Powerwash, and a scrub brush work wonders!
  • Walls, cabinets, doors, knobs, and switches – Similar to the baseboards, a bucket of hot water, small scoop of powdered tide and a soft cloth will have your walls and doors looking brand new!
  • Blinds – If your blinds are removable, place them in the shower for a good cleaning, and watch all the dust wash away.
  • Carpet/Rug cleaning – Whether you clean your carpets yourself, or hire a professional, now is the time to get it done. And while you’re at it, wash or replace any rugs.
  • Bathroom Exhaust fan – To keep your exhaust fan working properly, you’ll want to regularly clean and remove the build up that accumulates. Most fans are easy to remove and can be cleaned by vacuuming and rinsing.
  • Vacuum – That’s right, you need to clean the machine that cleans! Now is the time to take it apart to scrub, rinse, and sanitize every part. Filters can be washed or replaced if necessary. Once you’re done, it will feel like a brand-new vacuum.
  • Air filters – Air filters in your home should be replaced about every 90 days. Give yourself a headstart on spring cleaning by replacing your air filters to minimize dust and allergens in your home.
  • Closets – Clothes are made to fit us, we are not made to fit clothes! Rotate out your warm, cozy clothes for your favorite spring staples. Any seasonal piece of clothing that you didn’t use during the season can be donated.
  • Ceiling fans – It’s time to flip the switch on your ceiling fan to get that cool breeze moving through your home. To clean your fans, take a damp cloth with your favorite multi-purpose cleaner and wipe the blinds to remove any dust.
  • Refrigerator – Take out everything in your refrigerator and discard all items that are out of date. Once this step is complete, remove any drawers and wash them in the sink for easy access. Give your refrigerator a good spray with bleach water and wipe down all surfaces.
  • Garbage disposal – You can buy garbage disposal cleaner at most grocery stores, but you probably have ingredients at home that will do the trick. Baking soda and vinegar directly into the disposal will help break up any debris caught in the blades. After, drop ice cubes in the disposal and turn on. Lastly, let hot water run while the ice is in the disposal.
