Love and Advertising: How to win over hearts

It’s Valentine’s Day. Love is in the air. Chocolate, cards and and flowers are flying off the shelves. Cupid’s arrows are sharper than ever.

What better time to go over a few strategies that are applicable in both love and advertising. Here are a few tips that can be applied whether you are trying to win over a crush or a customer.

Tip No. 1.

Stop seeking the perfect match

Nobody is perfect. Be it a romantic interest or a prospective customer. Whether you are a bachelor, bachelorette or a brand, stop thinking your prospects must meet some long form checklist. Sure, shared interests are important And so are demographics, but if you are too narrow-minded in your search you’ll likely miss out on compatibility by thinking the ideal match has to hit each one of your preconceived parameters.

Tip No. 2

Don’t come on too strong

Whether you're courting a new fling or a new client, don't move too fast. Trying to convince a customer to act is like trying to convince someone to marry or move in with you on your first or second date. Relationships need to be cultivated. Customer conversions after only one marketing touchpoint are rare, just like love at first sight. To take that next step, they need to get to know you and learn about you.

Tip No. 3

Showcase why you might be “the one”

The same way a cheesy pick up line won't impress the date you are trying to woo, a generic message won't engage your customers. You need a combination of personalization and differentiation to stand out. Cater to that uniqueness. Understand what your date or customer is looking for a let them know how you are able to meet those expectations. Everyone brings something to the table, but each is seeking something different. Personalizing the messaging and being direct about what each party seeks simplifies and streamlines the process of finding compatibility.
